Description

According to the Toraja culture and belief, when someone dies, his or her spirit travels to it its destination in gradual prose. The funeral here in Toraja is very complex, and some textiles are used to symbolise the send-off of the spirit to heaven (puya).

This Ikat textile design is called Sekomandi ikat, traditionally used to symbolise funeral, but in today’s modern society, this ikat textile is also made for trade; for home décor, and even fabric for apparel.
