about wastra indonesia London

Wastra Indonesia London is a small online supplier of Indonesian ethically and sustainably produced handmade Indonesian traditional textiles and home accessories made from Indonesian handmade traditional textiles.  We are based in London, United Kingdom.

We want to describe Wastra Indonesia London as a social enterprise, as one of our primary goals is to help empower women artisans in Indonesia and work closely with these artisans to preserve the production of slow textiles using ancient methods that are less harmful to the environment.

A good percentage of our proceeds will go towards funding small projects we are currently managing in collaboration with weavers’ groups from around the archipelago.  Most of our textiles are made by members of these weavers’ groups, but some are acquired from small social entrepreneurs who have worked hard to sustain a steady production of these textiles.

Our close connection with Indonesian textile artisans started in 2012, and since then we have learned a great deal more about Indonesian textiles, the regional cultures they present and the way of life of the artisans who made them.

To find out more about our social connections with the artisans, please visit see our project update via Connect Indonesia, The Charity.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic state and the 14th-largest country by area. The country is made up of more than 17,000 inhabited islands and stretches approximately 3500 miles from the tip of Sumatra to Irian Jaya (West Papua), Each of these inhabited islands is rich in culture and tradition, and famous for its outstanding range of traditional crafts, in particular, traditional textiles are the most notable and collectable. Due to the unique production techniques used by the artisans.  Indonesian textiles have been inspiring artists, designers, anthropologists, and textile enthusiasts globally for years.

We feel such a privilege that we are able to build close connections with textile artisans from many different regions and understand the true process of Indonesian traditional textile production using ancient methods.    We believe that by appreciating this type of textile production and treasuring the talented textile artisans who made them, we can continue to preserve this precious culture and tradition for future generations to cherish and enjoy.
