Extra Large Indonesian Sumba Hinggi Ikat Textile | Naturally Dyed Ikat in Indigo and Morinda Red | Authentic Indonesian Ikat Wall Hanging

£700.00

Immerse yourself in this extra-large, rich cultural heritage of Sumba with this magnificent vintage hinggi ikat textile. This large, naturally dyed piece is a testament to the island’s celebrated weaving traditions, featuring a stunning palette of deep indigo blues and rich morinda reds on a natural off-white cotton base. The intricate and powerful design showcases ancestral motifs of ocean and land creatures, symbols of power, prestige, and the connection between the land and sea. Each thread is a story, meticulously dyed and woven by hand using age-old techniques passed down through generations. The natural dyes, sourced from local plants like indigo and morinda, create beautiful, nuanced shades that will only deepen in character over time.

Each hinggi is a ceremonial cloth, often worn by men during important rituals and ceremonies. The horse, a central motif, symbolises wealth, prestige, and the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. The intricate patterns are achieved through the ikat technique, where threads are resist-dyed before weaving—a process that requires remarkable patience and skill.
