Vintage Sumba Hinggi Ikat Textile | Handwoven Mahogany and Morinda Dye | Mid-20th Century Indonesian Ikat Wall Hanging

£600.00

This impressive Hinggi ikat wall hanging from East Sumba Island, Indonesia, is a powerful example of traditional textile art, featuring mythical figures, ancestral forms, and horses woven into its richly detailed design. Each motif carries deep cultural meaning, symbolizing lineage, protection, and spiritual connection. The textile is handwoven in cotton using the ikat resist-dye technique, where threads are meticulously bound and dyed before weaving. The result is a finely executed composition with sharp, symmetrical patterns and superb visual impact. Its warm mahogany-brown tones, achieved with natural plant dyes, are enhanced by earthy shades of Morinda, creating a rich, layered palette that feels both grounding and vibrant. The robust quality of the weaving ensures durability while preserving the textile’s refined artistry. Perfect as a statement wall hanging, collector’s piece, or decorative textile, this hinggi embodies both heritage and timeless design.

As an authentic, handwoven textile crafted on a traditional back-strap loom, this piece may contain minor imperfections and unique variations. These are not flaws, but rather cherished hallmarks of its genuine, handmade origin. Slight irregularities in the weave and subtle variations in the natural dye colours are a testament to the artisan’s hand and the time-honoured process used to create it. We believe these details add to the unique character and story of each textile, confirming its place as a one-of-a-kind work of art.
