Vintage Extra Long Sumba Hinggi Ikat | Handwoven Natural Dye Textile | Traditional Marapu Motifs

£550.00

This exquisite vintage Sumba Hinggi Ikat from the 1980s is a true collector’s piece, handwoven with natural dyes in the time-honoured traditions of Sumba, Indonesia. Woven in soft morinda red, deep indigo blue, and black, the textile features striking horses and sacred motifs that hold deep cultural significance in the Marapu spiritual tradition.

Each hinggi is a ceremonial cloth, often worn by men during important rituals and ceremonies. The horse, a central motif, symbolises wealth, prestige, and the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. The intricate patterns are achieved through the ikat technique, where threads are resist-dyed before weaving—a process that requires remarkable patience and skill.
